Motel Glen Capri by Enyjé Sandoz
Project: Russian Constructivism - Website Landing Page
As seen in MTV's ‘Teen Wolf’ and historically visited by celebrities over the years, the Glen Capri Inn is a staple in Los Angeles culture (though located in Glendale, CA) as it is conveniently located to studios, freeways, excursions like the zoo, and so much more.
The Russian Constructivism era was a time of protest against traditional art. It was bold; it carried meaning; it was used to convey social change.
The inspiration picture (on the second slide) instantly brought the Glen Capri to mind as its Hollywood theme directly tied the film aspect of the inspiration picture. In a way, the Hollywood theme to the Russian Constructivism era is like a direct juxtaposition—‘Hollywood’ being a traditional ‘standard’, which the Russian Constructivism era would’ve opposed.
Conversely, film is evocative and can have the same impact as graphic design, imbued with societal messaging to bring about social change. In a way, using the Russian Constructivism-inspired picture to formulate a landing website page for a Hollywood-themed hotel further emphasizes Hollywood’s ubiquitous platform, and it should and could be used for good, rather than perpetuating certain schemas and maintaining the status quo.
